BEIRUT, Dec 3 (KUNA) -- Lebanon's Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati said Saturday that the Beirut International and Arab Book Fair is distinguished by its name and the participation of Arab brothers with their varied publications.
This came in a speech delivered by Mikati at the fair, saying it is the 64th edition of the fair which has turned into a cultural landmark and constitutes an annual occasion to view the latest works and publications in various intellectual and scientific fields.
He said that seeking knowledge through the Internet or any other means of communication is not an alternative to books, as the Arabs are waiting for the annual opening of the Beirut book fair.
The fair is a direct meeting between the reader and the book on one hand, and between the writers themselves on the other hand, he told KUNA.
On political affairs, Mikati said 'what is required first and foremost is the political will of the various political forces and blocs to complete the convening of constitutional institutions by electing a new President of the Republic as soon as possible', according to National News Agency (NNA).
He further stressed that approving reform laws should take place before the final agreement with the International Monetary Fund to secure the appropriate opportunity for the promised economic recovery and get the 'country out of the circle of the long-awaited crisis'.
Meanwhile, Samira Asi, head of the Lebanese Publishers Union, lauded in a similar statement to KUNA the role of the Gulf countries, especially Kuwait, in supporting Lebanese publishers.
She said Kuwait has been supporting culture in Lebanon, and helping the country is all fields and in various circumstances.
Head of the Arab Cultural Club organizing the exhibition, Salwa Siniora Baasiri, told KUNA that the fair has been continuing since 1956 despite challenges in Lebanon.
She indicated that 133 publishing houses are taking part in Beirut fair, which will last until December 11. The fair includes 24 symposiums, which are a chance for people to communicate directly and enrich interaction. (end)
