IAEA Chief Hopes To Create Safety Zone Around Zaporizhzhia NPP By Year-End

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi hopes to reach an agreement with Russia and Ukraine in order to create a protection zone around Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) by the end of 2022.

The relevant statement was made by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi in an interview with Italy's newspaper La Repubblica, an Ukrinform correspondent reports, referring to reuters .

“My commitment is to reach a solution as soon as possible. I hope by the end of the year,” Grossi said.

In this regard, Grossi did not rule out meeting Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“Our goal is to avoid a nuclear accident, not to create a military situation that would favour either one party or the other,” Grossi added.

A reminder that Russian troops seized Zaporizhzhia NPP on March 4, 2022. Since then, Russian invaders have been deploying military equipment and ammunition within the plant's industrial site, shelling the plant and adjacent territories, causing damage to power transmission lines and provoking external power outages.
