DFI Funded Films Win Big At 44Th Cairo International Film Festival

The Doha Film Institute (DFI) has announced that six of its grant recipient films which have won major awards at 44th Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF), the oldest running film festival in the Middle East and Africa. 

Alam (The Flag) by Firas Khoury won the Golden Pyramid Award, Audience Award and Best Actor Award. The Golden Pyramid Award is the highest prize for best film.

The film 19B by Ahmed Abdalla bagged the Best Arab Film, and Best Artistic Contribution Awards. The Dam by Ali Cherri took home the Best Actor Award; Riverbed by Bassem Brech won the Jury Prize (Arab Horizons Competition), and Best Performance.

Cotton Queen by Suzannah Mirghani received the Distribution and Marketing Fund Award by Mad Solutions. And Let's Play Soldiers by Mariam Al Dhubhani bagged the Arab Cinema Centre Award.

The DFI made this announcement on its official social media accounts.

Some of the filmmakers expressed their gratitude to DFI and everyone else who offered assistance while their films were being developed.

Brech, who made the film Riverbed, thanked everyone who became part of the movie.“You've been great Cairo. Thank you [for] every single one who was a part of the making!.” 

Mirghani also extended her gratitude to the DFI and mentioned the support of her teammates who made the film possible. It can be recalled that in May, her film Cotton Queen bagged the ArteKino Award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival's L'Atelier.

The 44th Cairo International Film Festival started on November 13 and continued till November 22 and the award ceremony was held at Cairo Opera House. The CIFF is one of the only 15 festivals accorded with a category“A” status by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations.

The DFI Financing aims to support filmmakers in their efforts to tell stories, to foster creativity, to link local and foreign talent, and to develop a sustainable film financing model in Qatar. The Institute assists up-and-coming storytellers from Qatar and other countries, giving them the creative and financial support they need to turn their stories into successful films and serialised content.
