Argentina wins despite Messi's missed penalty

(MENAFN) Argentina defeated Poland to advance to the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, despite Lionel Messi's missed penalty. Poland also advanced to the round of 16 despite their defeat.

Argentina responded with goals from Alexis MacAllister early in the second half and a Julian Alvarez goal in the 67th minute to easily secure the victory after Messi saw his first-half penalty kick brilliantly saved by Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

Argentina finished with six points to lead Group C, while Poland advanced in second place with four points, level with Mexico but with a better goal differential.

Mexico defeated Saudi Arabia 2-1 on a tense night of play, but they were unable to score the third goal that would have advanced them at Poland's expense.

At one point, Mexico and Poland were tied for first place in Group C on points, goal difference, and goals scored, with Mexico leading 2-0 thanks to goals from Henry Martin and a thunderous free-kick from Luis Chavez. Mexico trailed Poland solely because of the Poles' superior discipline record in Qatar at the time.
