Yellen suggests investigation into purchase of Twitter for "national security"

(MENAFN) In a U-turn after downplaying the likelihood of a probe, United States Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen claimed federal officials could seek to launch a review into Twitter's recent acquisition by billionaire businessman Elon Musk.

Yellen declared she "misspoke" when she suggested there was "no basis" to look into Musk's finances during an interview earlier this month, now clarifying that the government might in fact do so. She made this assertion while speaking at a New York Times-sponsored event on Wednesday.

“I’m not going to say specifically what we are looking at. We don’t comment on what’s in progress,” she also mentioned, but noted that the Treasury “does look at transactions that involve foreign investments in the United States to see if they create national security risk.”

While she refrained from officially claiming that an investigation was ongoing, Yellen declared: “If there are such risks it would be appropriate for the Treasury to have a look.”
