(MENAFN) In the midst of Ukraine's conflict with Russia, the US Army has revealed that Raytheon has been given a USD1.2 billion contract to construct six National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) for Ukraine.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Department of Defense, “work will be performed in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, with an estimated completion date of November 28, 2025.”
Out of the eight NASAMS units promised by Washington, Kiev has so far received two. After being constructed, Ukraine is anticipated to receive the remaining systems.
The contract also includes training for Ukraine's military personnel and logistical support in addition to the NASAMS batteries themselves.
It is supported by the so-called Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which enables the Biden administration to buy weaponry from the defense sector rather than using United States military supplies that are already on hand.
Due to Russia's recent widespread missile attacks against military targets and energy infrastructure, Ukraine has stated that it is in urgent need of air defense systems. Since accusing Ukraine of employing "terrorist tactics" and attacking Russian infrastructure, including the crucial Crimean Bridge, on October 10, Moscow has increased pressure on Kiev.
