Russia condemns Canada over LGBTQ rule

(MENAFN) The Russian embassy in Canada has criticized the nation’s administration over its opposition to a new law criminalizing the spread of LGBTQ “propaganda” in Russia. Canadians should keep their “alien” beliefs to themselves, the diplomatic mission underlined on Saturday, retelling them that there are only two genders.

The measure restricts “propaganda” normalizing non-traditional ties, pedophilia, and gender reassignment, and passed the upper house of Russia’s State Duma on Thursday. Widely witnessed as a follow-up to a 2013 law banning the spread of LGBTQ materials among minors, it extends this restriction to “both minors and adults.”

Canada slammed the passage of the bill, blaming Russian politicians of starting “a climate of fear and intimidation” among LGBTQ people and “impacting the human rights of all in Russia.”
The condemnation was inked by 33 other members of the ‘Equal Rights Coalition,’ a group of mostly Western countries loyal to support gay rights around the globe.

By opposing the bill, Canada is “deliberately distorting reality by conflating the concepts of individual sexual preferences and universal human rights,” the Russian embassy tweeted. “There is no discrimination in Russia with respect to the rights of sexual and other kinds of minorities,” the embassy continued. “However…a person's freedom ends where another man’s freedom begins.”

“We believe that non-traditional relations propaganda…infringes the rights of the traditional majority of Russian citizens willing to protect themselves and their children from being imposed with precepts that are alien to their spiritual and moral values,” according to the tweet.
