Majority of Germans oppose Merkel's return

(MENAFN) According to a recent poll, the majority of Germans would be against former Chancellor Angela Merkel making a comeback. Just under a year ago, she resigned from her position as the head of the country's government.

Based on the data gathered by the Civey polling institute for the Funke Media Group and released by several German media outlets on Saturday, 71 percent of respondents would not want to see the former leader back in office, while 23 percent would welcome her return.

But 43 percent of Germans think Olaf Scholz, the present chancellor, is superior to her. 41 percent of people express the opposing opinion.

Merkel served as the leader of four successive German administrations for 16 years, falling only a few days short of Helmut Kohl's record-breaking stint as chancellor. Merkel has come under fire since leaving office for the way her energy strategy left Germany reliant on imported Russian electricity.
