Large crowd protests Irish housing crisis

(MENAFN) On Saturday, thousands of people demonstrated in Dublin to urge the government to address the country's housing and homelessness crises. Despite the support of Irish celebrities, right-wing activists contend that immigration is to blame for the situation.

'Raise the Roof’, a group of politicians, unions, and homeless charities, organized the protest. The group wants the Irish government to create more affordable housing, establish a "legal right to housing," and strengthen the rights of tenants.

The demonstration was supported by Ireland's two largest opposition parties, Sinn Fein and the Labour Party, and promoted by celebrities like singer Christy Moore and "Game of Thrones" actor Liam Cunningham. It took place as Ireland deals with the challenges of record homelessness, skyrocketing rents, a shortage of housing, and an unprecedented influx of refugees and asylum seekers.

Despite the fact that the Raise the Roof manifesto makes no mention of addressing the demand side, the protest organizers urged the government to increase the supply of housing, including by requisitioning vacant properties.
