KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Thursday formally launched a microfinance scheme for displaced families and returning refugees, the refuge agency.
UNHCR in a statement said the small loan scheme was launched in cooperation with the Aga Khan Development Network. It said eligible people will be given loans from 25,000 afghanis to 300,000 afghanis, specially for women-run small businesses.
“Returning and displaced Afghans aged between 18 and 60 years can get the small loans if they have a valid identity card and a rational business plan.”
UNHCR said the purpose of giving loans was to benefit the most vulnerable people in Afghanistan as they move into productive economic activities.
The scheme is initially being rolled out by First Micro Finance Bank in Balkh, Bamyan, Herat, Kabul, and Nangarhar provinces. It will expand to other locations where FMFB-A maintains branches.
On November 15, the statement said, the first beneficiaries of the program — three women and two men — received their loans.
