Ukraine demands Russia to be expelled from Red Cross
(MENAFN) A senior Ukrainian official suggested on Tuesday that the Red Cross should remove its Russian branch over its fundraising efforts to help the families of deployed reservists and, reportedly, the reservists themselves.
Dmitry Lubinets, the Ukrainian parliament's commissioner for human rights, accused the Russian Red Cross of supporting the partial mobilization planned by President Vladimir Putin last month. He went on to say that by assisting with mobilization efforts, the group is "supporting a horrific conflict" in Ukraine.
As a result, Lubinets demanded that the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies remove its Russian section and deprive it of its characteristic insignia.
The official went on to emphasize that “social protection of the families of military personnel who went to war in a foreign independent and sovereign country cannot be humane,” outlining that this would only “increase the number of civilians who will be tortured and killed in Ukraine.”
His remarks come a day after the Ukrainian Red Cross blamed its Russian counterpart of “repeatedly violating the principle of neutrality” by aiding Moscow’s military personnel. It urged its international partners to “take strict measures” to stop such actions.
