Russian official: Ukraine's World Cup candidacy is entirely political

(MENAFN) Aleksandr Dyukov, a Russian football official, believes Ukraine has every right to apply for the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal, but regards the move as solely "political."

On Wednesday, it was formally declared that Ukraine will be included in the Spanish-Portuguese campaign to earn the World Cup hosting rights in eight years.

The details of the joint proposal have yet to be confirmed, but according to rumors, Ukraine hopes to host one group of the 48-team event.

Russian Football Union (RFU) head Dyukov responded to the news by saying that Ukrainian involvement in the Spanish-Portuguese bid made little business sense.

“It is their right [to bid]. The application needs to be studied. I do not see any commercial or marketing logic in such an application,” according to the Russian football official on Wednesday, as stated by RIA Novosti.

“The incorporation of Ukraine did not make the initial bid stronger. I see nothing here except politics,” noting Dyukov, who serves as a UEFA Executive Committee member.
