(MENAFN) Belarus is facing a tactical nuclear strike from Poland, according to President Alexander Lukashenko, in reaction to reports that Warsaw and Washington have been in "nuclear sharing" negotiations. Lukashenko stated that he will speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the situation.
“Polish President Andrzej Duda said yesterday that they’ve already agreed with the Americans to host the arsenal in Poland. What’s that tell us? That we really face an attack with tactical nuclear weapons,” Lukashenko informed the TV channel STV.
Belarus, which lacks nuclear weapons, must take "necessary steps," according to Lukashenko, who added that he will address the matter with the Kremlin.
In an interview published on Wednesday, Duda informed Gazeta Polska that Warsaw had approached the US about joining in its "nuclear sharing" program.
“We have spoken to the American leaders about whether the US is considering such a possibility. The issue remains open,” the Polish president claimed.
A White House source told the Guardian that the US was "not aware of this problem being addressed" in response to Duda's comments.
Vedant Patel, a State Department spokeswoman, said Thursday afternoon that they were “not aware of this specific item being raised … And I can say that the United States has no plans to deploy a nuclear weapon on NATO member territory that had joined NATO post 1997.” Poland became a member of the EU in 1999.
