UN refugee agency gives Merkel highest award for her efforts in hosting refugees

(MENAFN) The UN refugee agency stated on Tuesday that it’s awarding previous German Chancellor Angela Merkel with its highest award for her hard work to host over 1 million refugees — mainly from Syria — into her nation, in spite of some disapproval from her nation as well as from outside the nation.

Matthew Saltmarsh, representative for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, stated that Merkel had been chosen as the most recent receiver for the Nansen prize, which is given on a yearly basis by the Geneva-located UN agency.

Saltmarsh informed journalists that “Under the then-Federal Chancellor Merkel’s leadership, Germany welcomed more than 1.2 million refugees and asylum-seekers in 2015 and 2016, which, as you will remember, was the height of the conflict in Syria, and there was deadly violence in other parts of the world, Dr. Merkel helped to highlight the plight of refugees globally.”

The prize contains a USD150,000 as an honor to her efforts. Merkel is likely to take a trip to Geneva next Monday to accept the award, Saltmarsh stated.
