Iran claims that 450 people have been arrested as result of massive anti-hijab protests

(MENAFN) Authorities in a northern Iranian province arrested 450 people during more than ten days of protests following the death of a young Kurdish woman in morality policy custody, according to state media on Monday.

Hundreds of protesters, reformist activists, and journalists have been arrested across the country during mostly nighttime protests since Mahsa Amini's death was announced on September 16.

Amini, whose Kurdish first name was Jhina, had been detained in Tehran three days earlier for allegedly violating rules requiring hijab head coverings and modest dress.

"During the troubles of the past days, 450 rioters have been arrested in Mazandaran," the northern province's chief prosecutor, Mohammad Karimi, was cited as stating by official news agency IRNA.

They "have attacked government buildings and damaged public property in several parts of Mazandaran", he noted.

Protesters were yelling anti-regime slogans, according to local media, and Karimi claimed they were led by "foreign anti-revolutionary agents."
