IAEA chief says he is prepared for talks this week regarding Zaporizhzhia facility

(MENAFN) The director of the UN's nuclear inspector has stated that he is prepared to hold negotiations with Russia and Ukraine this week about establishing a protection zone at the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia, which is now under Russian occupation.

“There is a plan on the table to do it. Last week I had an opportunity to start consultations with Ukraine and with the Russian Federation … and I am ready to continue these consultations in both countries this week,” Grossi informed a conference of International Atomic Energy Agency member states at the agency’s headquarters in Vienna.

Even though Russian military took control of the Zaporizhzhia plant in early March, just a few weeks after Moscow began its offensive, Ukrainian employees continue to run the facility.

Its location near active battlegrounds and recent barrage of shelling have increased global apprehension about the possibility of a nuclear mishap. The strikes on and around the facility have drawn accusations from both Moscow and Kyiv.
