The Equinox EV will debut in the fall of 2023 with a limited-edition 2RS. Built on GM's Ultium platform, the midsize SUV will get up to 300 miles of range and will start at“around $30,000” — an affordable price point that's intended to drive broader EV adoption.
The Equinox EV is the third electric vehicle from General Motors, joining the full-sized Chevrolet Silverado EV truck and midsize Blazer EV SUV already announced earlier this year. Equinox was intentionally priced by the automakers to be one of the most price-competitive and affordable electric vehicles in the compact SUV class segment.
“We are at a turning point where EVs will be the mainstream choice for the next generation of customers and Equinox EV will lead this charge for us,” said Mary Barra, chair and CEO of General Motors in a press statement.“With the flexibility of GM's Ultium Platform, we are bringing to market vehicles at nearly every price point and for every purpose.”
Most EVs on the market today are more expensive than their gas equivalents, though EV sales numbers are still ticking up as more models become available.
GM is hoping that a more affordable EV with a nameplate as recognizable as the Equinox could help spur a faster switch to electric power. Other EV makers have promised affordable options only to get tripped up by battery costs, supply chain problems, and other external factors.
All Equinox EVs will be assembled at GM's Ramos Arizpe facility in Mexico, which qualifies it (along with its sub-$55,000 retail price) for the new federal tax credit for electric cars, which is worth $7,500.
Ordering and pricing information will be announced closer to production.
