Around one in six Germans over 65 are at risk of becoming poor

(MENAFN) According to a survey by the Federal Statistical Office and released by the German media company Funke, one in six Germans over 65 are at risk of becoming poor.

The report made reference to the study, “the poverty risk rate for people over 65 increased from 14.7 percent to 17.4 percent between 2018 and 2021. Nearly one in six people over 65 in Germany is at risk of poverty, meaning they have less than 60 percent of the median income at their disposal.”

The results show that older women are more likely to be in danger of poverty. Men over 65 had a poverty risk rate of 15.1 percent, while women over 65 had a danger rating of 19.3 percent. Moreover, the findings prompted the left-leaning Bundestag group to call for government action.

Dietmar Bartsch, the leader of the parliamentary group, claimed to the Funke newspaper. He restated his party's demand for a basic pension of euro1,200 and expressed concern that this winter's skyrocketing heating costs would cause a large number of elderly Germans to become penniless, “the chancellor's ‘stable pensions’ are a fairy tale. Poverty in old age is exploding.”
