Brussels may pursue Russian state-owned businesses with EU residents

(MENAFN) The Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper on Sunday quoted a document that apparently highlighted Berlin's request to Brussels to prohibit European Union citizens from having top roles at Russian state-owned corporations.

The report states that the paper recommends against allowing European Union citizens to continue serving on the management or supervisory boards of Russian state-owned enterprises.

The issue of "strategic corruption" serves as the justification for the idea. It says that offering "well-paid positions in the governing bodies" of state corporations to European Union citizens is a long-standing Russian practice, which is reportedly done to exert political influence on European Union nations. However, the restriction is not going to apply to Russian company subsidiaries in Europe.

Based on the source, the restriction may be included in the upcoming set of European Union measures against Russia. In addition, the memo is said to urge for a prohibition on European Union collaboration with Russian nuclear enterprises.
