Russian draft evaders are welcome in Germany

(MENAFN) Russians escaping the country's partial military mobilization would be welcomed in Germany, federal Justice Minister Marco Buschmann said in reaction to Moscow's declaration on Wednesday.

However, the concept of granting shelter to Russian draft evaders, which was apparently floated by some members of the ruling coalition, was condemned by other EU parliamentarians.

“Apparently, many Russians are leaving their homeland,” Buschmann posted on Twitter on Wednesday evening, highlighting that “anyone who hates [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s path and loves liberal democracy is warmly welcomed in Germany.”

The minister's remarks were in response to accusations in Ukrainian media that Russians were fleeing in droves after the Kremlin announced the call-up of 300,000 reservists, which swiftly spread throughout the West. Anti-government groups reported that up to 1,000 individuals were arrested during anti-mobilization protests around Russia.

According to Der Spiegel, Buschmann's Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Greens - two members of the government 'traffic light coalition' - have proposed offering shelter to Russians fleeing the call-up.
