AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Wednesday took part in the 6th ministerial meeting of the Munich Group, held on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The meeting saw the participation of the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and the UN Special Coordinator for Peace in the Middle East. According to a Foreign Ministry statement, the group includes Egypt, Germany and France, in addition to Jordan.
The statement affirmed that the participants would hold a multilateral international system to serve as a basis for achieving peace, security and development.
The ministry noted that the ministers reiterated the 'indispensable' nature of resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on the basis of the two-state solution for comprehensive peace in the region.
The ministers also stressed their commitment to support all efforts towards achieving a just and lasting peace in the Middle East on the basis of international law and the relevant Security Council resolutions with the agreed references, including the Arab Peace Initiative.
A two-state solution guaranteeing the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 lines, living alongside a secure Israel, is the only way to meet the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinians and Israelis, the ministers said.
They emphasised the need to resume negotiations, calling for an immediate and full cessation of all unilateral actions, further advocating for respecting the conventions of international law and international humanitarian law.
The ministers also expressed regret over the large number of civilian deaths in recent weeks and months, underlining the necessity of ceasing all unilateral actions that undermine the two-state solution and prospects for a just and lasting peace, the statement read.
The ministers affirmed the necessity of preserving the status quo in Jerusalem's holy sites and the importance of the Hashemite Custodianship in Jerusalem.
The ministers stated that religious holidays should not be used for political purposes, and called for initiating a fundamental change in the political, security and economic situation in the Gaza Strip, highlighting the essential role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
