Arab League Commends Media Role In Combating Terrorism

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, Sept 22 (KUNA) -- Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmad Abul-Gheit said Thursday the Arab mass media play an active role in the combat against terrorist and extremist ideology that runs counter to 'our moderate values.'
He called on the media outlets to continue working responsibly and relentlessly for cementing the social texture of the Arab communities.
Abul-Gheit made the comments in a speech read on his behalf by the League's Assistant Secretary-General for Media and Communication Affairs Ahmad Khattabi to the 52nd session of the Council of Arab Ministers of Information.
'The biggest challenge facing us is to maintain the security, stability and institutional architecture, mobilize our resources, including the media, for strengthening the regional integration,' he said.
The League chief stressed the need to maintaining 'the bridges of dialogue and communication' among the Arab countries and putting the Arab national interests above all considerations.
He appreciated the efforts being made to realize targets of the Arab media strategy, notably those relating to the protection of the legitimacy of the Palestine cause 'in the core of which is the legal and spiritual status of Jerusalem.'
In this connection, Abul-Gheit approved the Palestinian initiative for lobbying to declare May 11 an international day for solidarity with the Palestinian media in commemoration of Shireen Abu Aqla, a Palestinian-American reporter of Al-Jazeera Arabic TV channel who was shot dead by the Israeli forces while reporting on an Israeli operation in the occupied West Bank.
He stressed the need of the Arab media keeping abreast with the technological advancement and digital transformation through working out a single strategy covering the dimensions of financing and content. (end)
