Thousands Demonstrate In Brussels Against The Cost-Of-Living Crisis

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Sept 21 (KUNA) -- Thousands of people took part in a demonstration in Brussels Wednesday to call for action against the Cost-of-Living crisis in Belgium and in support for wage increases.
The protests disrupted public transport in the Belgian capital, local media reported.
'Even basic products like food are becoming 5% to 10% more expensive' Miranda Ulens of the socialist union ABVV told local press. 'Spending power needs to be strengthened', she told the VRT broadcaster.
'The energy crisis is the last straw' said Marc Leemans, leader of the Christian union ACV. 'Citizens are being strangled by rising prices'.
Thierry Bodson of the socialist ABVV union spoke of the precarious situation of many fellow citizens: 'It's not that we don't want to pay, we can't pay' he told the protesters.
The Brussels airport in a statement said it did not expect a major impact on airport operations, but due to a limited capacity of ground handling for some flights possible delays are not ruled out. (end)
