Dow Jones starts new week in negative territory


(MENAFN) The Dow Jones was unsuccessful to regain from a 100-point decrease on Monday, beginning the new week in red territory.

The blue-chip index saw a drop of 184 points, or 0.57 percent, to close the day at 32,099 after it declined to as low as 31,972 throughout the session.

The S&P 500 fell 27 points, or 0.67 percent, to finish at 4,030, whereas the tech-heavy Nasdaq dropped 124 points, or 1.02 percent, to stand at 12,017.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 2.3 percent to 26.14. The 10-year US Treasury yield was 2.4 percent higher to 3.108 percent.

Whereas the dollar index was unaffected at 108.81, the euro jumped 0.34 percent to USD0.9994.

Precious metals were in red territory, with gold falling 0.05 percent to USD1,737 as well as silver losing 0.7 percent to USD18.77.

Oil prices were up. Global oil main Brent crude stood at USD102.69 a barrel for a 3.7 percent earn, whereas US main West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was increased 4.1 percent to USD96.91.
