QALA-I-NAW (Pajhwok): Residents of western Badghis province complain that historic monuments in the province are on the verge of destruction.
According to the Information and Culture department, nearly 60 heritage sites have been registered in the province.
The key sites are Nariman fort in Abkarmi district, the shrine of Mir Ghayasuddin Langarsharif, the Shah Mashhad seminary in Jund district, and the Murichak Qala.
Abdul Raqib, a resident of Qala-i-Naw city, told Pajhwok Afghan News the historical places expressed the identity and ancient culture of a land and attention should be paid to their preservation.
He said:“There are many historical sites in our province and each has a special value, but unfortunately the previous governments did not pay attention to their preservation and each of them is teetering on the verge of destruction.”
Meanwhile, Gul Mohammad, another resident, criticized the inattention of the previous government towards restoration and preservation of historical monuments in the province.
Sayed Mahmood Fahim, a university professor in Badghis, called historic monuments a cultural heritage of every land and said the cultural heritage showed a nation's history and civilization.
“The preservation and protection of historical monuments is an important and necessary matter and practical steps should be taken in this regard.”
Maulvi Baz Mohammad Sarwari, acting director of the Badghis information and culture department, said:“With the establishment of the Islamic Emirate, we visited all historical places and had many suggestions for their preservation and restoration.”
According to his information, nearly 60 historical sites have been registered in the province.
He added they had made various suggestions to the central government to preserve and take care of these places.
