UN appeals to Russia, Ukraine regarding nuclear concerns

(MENAFN) Antonio Guterres, the secretary-general of the UN, said on Thursday that it is "unacceptable" to put the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in Ukraine at risk. He emphasized that making it off-limits for any military action requires negotiation between Kiev and Moscow.

“I urge the parties to withdraw any military personnel and equipment from the plant and refrain from any further deployment of forces or equipment to the site,” the senior official claimed. “Instead, urgent agreement is needed at a technical level on a safe perimeter of demilitarization to ensure the safety of the area.”

Over the past few weeks, a number of assaults have been made against the Zaporozhye plant, which is situated in the city of Energodar, which is under the control of Russia in Ukraine. Moscow has charged Kiev with attacking the facility with artillery and drone strikes, calling these actions "nuclear terorism."

Kiev has asserted that Russia targeted the plant as part of an alleged scheme to harm Ukraine. According to Ukrainian officials, Russia is staging troops and large-caliber weapons there while using it as a military base.
