(MENAFN) The US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in South Korea, according to a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, threatens China's strategic security, and Beijing cannot ignore it.
Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said on Friday that Beijing could not ignore the US missile defense shield's installation in South Korea. He also expressed optimism that Seoul could "fully handle" the matter, which Seoul claims cannot ever be the topic of discussions.
Wang informed a briefing, “China has always respected South Korea’s sovereignty and understood its security concerns, but the US deployment of THAAD missile systems in South Korea undermines China’s strategic security, and Beijing cannot ignore this.”
In a meeting earlier this week in the Chinese city of Qingdao, representatives of the foreign ministries of China and South Korea spoke about the deployment of the US missile defense system. Both parties concurred that the missile defense system shouldn't deteriorate Beijing and Seoul's political ties.
“We hope that the South Korean side will continue to properly resolve this issue in accordance with the mutual understanding and consensus reached at the meeting of foreign ministers of the two countries,” Wang highlighted.
