The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that a flight carrying 300 Afghans had landed in Madrid, the Spanish capital from Pakistan.

According to Jose Manuel Albares, the foreign minister of Spain, Afghan nationals, who had worked with the Spanish government during the NATO mission in Afghanistan, were evacuated to Spain with their families.

As soon as the plane from Islamabad landed at the airport in Madrid, the foreign minister, Jose Manuel Albares, was reportedly there to welcome them.

According to Albares, the Spanish government will now try to help these people assimilate, knowing that it will be difficult for them to return to Afghanistan in the near future.

In August 2021, as the Taliban rebels quickly gained territory throughout Afghanistan, Spain acted quickly to evacuate Afghans who had assisted Spanish troops and diplomats.

During the Western pullout as the Taliban seized control, Spain evacuated more than 2,000 Afghans, who feared persecution from the new Taliban rulers since they had worked for Spanish military or the Spanish embassy in Afghanistan for nearly two decades during NATO's presence.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stated that Madrid would not lose interest in the Afghans who had remained” in their country but wished to leave.

Spain had sent around 27,000 of its soldiers to Afghanistan throughout its 20-year presence, and 102 of these soldiers died.

Earlier, as many as 181 Afghans were relocated from Pakistan's Islamabad to the Netherlands via chartered flights.
