Taiwan conducts military exercise following threats from China

(MENAFN) After Beijing called off its largest-ever military drills surrounding the island and its repeated threats to seize control of the self-ruled democracy, Taiwan's army conducted another live-fire practice on Thursday.

Beijing is furious about United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan last week. She was the highest-ranking elected American official to travel there in decades. Days of air and sea drills were held near the island, which increased tensions to their greatest point in years.

China has been accused by Taiwan of starting drills so that it may practice an invasion using the arrival of Pelosi as an excuse.

In the course of the defense exercise on Thursday morning, howitzers and target flares were fired by Taiwan's Eighth Army Corps, according to Lou Woei-jye, spokesperson for the army.

According to him, the practice in Pingtung, Taiwan's southernmost nation, started at 8:00 am (0:00 GMT) and continued for roughly an hour.

A live broadcast showed howitzers concealed along the coast were lined up side by side and being fired out to sea one after the other by armed men in formations.
