Diaspora Of Malappuram Conducts Kick Off 2022

Doha: An organisation of Indian expatriates from Malappuram district in Qatar, Diaspora of Malappuram (DoM) Qatar, conducted Kick off 2022 in association with Calicut University at the campus recently as part of DoM Qatar's one-year long programme to support FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. 

The event was conducted as three sessions. The first session was an Intercollegiate Quiz on world football, led by Grandmaster GS Pradeep. Students from around 100 colleges participated in this quiz programme. 

Alex Alysious and Adarsh from National College Alappuzha, Muhammed Faheem and Muhammed Muhfin from Delhi University and Alex Robert and Aju Babu from Alphonsa College Thiruvambaadi won first, second and third prizes respectively. Calicut University Vice-Chancellor Dr. M K Jayaraj presented the certificates and cash awards to the winners. Winners got Rs52,022, Runner-up got Rs25,022 and Second Runner-up got Rs12,022 as cash awards.

Huge gate indicating DoM Qatar's support to Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022 welcomed the participants and audience to the venue. An exhibition of World Cup football stadiums in Qatar was also there at the venue along with stadium show on mega LED wall.

Second session, a Symposium on sports was presided over by Dom Qatar President VC Mashhood. General Secretary Abdul Asees Chevidikunnan delivered the welcome speech. Videos about the FIFA stadiums and the facilities, culture of Qatar screened in the event. 

During the inaugural session of this symposium DoM Qatar and University of Calicut honoured former Indian national football player Dr. I M Vijayan for his doctorate achievement from a Russian university for the contribution in the field of football for India. 

Famous Malayalam football commentator Shaiju Damodaran, Dr. VP Zakir Hussain, Director of Department of Physical Education- Calicut University, Damodharan, International sports writer Kamal Varadur, Dr. Muhammadali Palliyali, Associate Professor Department of Physical Education - Calicut University presented various topics in the symposium. 

Footballs bearing the World Cup logo, provided by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, the Qatar World Cup Organising Committee, were distributed to the Vice-Chancellors and other guests, contestants representing colleges, selected colleges and clubs. 

Former Indian goalkeeper Victor Manjila and sports journalist Jeena Paul delivered felicitation speeches in the function. Vice-President Basheer Kuniyil concluded the session with a vote of thanks. After the indoor programmes in the university seminar complex a veterans football match also conducted at Calicut University football ground; former national and state football players took part in this friendly match.
