(MENAFN) The Israeli government has been praised by United States Vice President Joe Biden for protecting its citizens and preserving "countless lives" during Operation Breaking Dawn against Gaza extremists. Before a tenuous truce took effect on Sunday night, three days of tit-for-tat attacks had devastated the leadership of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and killed dozens of Palestinians.
Despite a chaotic beginning, the truce looked to be holding, the United States commander declared in a statement on Sunday night, “my support for Israel’s security is long-standing and unwavering — including its right to defend itself against attacks.”
At 11:30 p.m. regional time, only minutes after the cease-fire went into force, three rockets were apparently fired from Gaza and claimed intercepted by Israeli defenses. The IDF reported no attacks in retaliation, and no one has claimed credit for the incident.
Biden also mentioned, “over these recent days, Israel has defended its people from indiscriminate rocket attacks launched by the terrorist group Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and the United States is proud of our support for Israel’s Iron-Dome, which intercepted hundreds of rockets and saved countless lives.”
