Doha: Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI) organised an orientation day for the first cohort of the admitted students for the PhD studies, yesterday.
In his welcome remarks, Dr Abdel Wahab El-Affendi, President of DI, described the day as a historical moment in DI's path since the launch of the PhD studies programme that expresses the peak of achievement for any postgraduate institution.
He said that an achievement truly deserved and only earned by hard work and fulfillment of all components. Dr El-Affendi confirmed that four students have been accepted in the programme; two Qatari students, one resident of Qatar and the fourth one is an international student from Switzerland.
Eman Al Sulaiti, Executive Director of the Administrative and Financial Division at the institute, addressed the crowd by welcoming the new students into DI family pointing out that PhD studies programme is a pivotal step for DI to achieve its objective in becoming an international centre of excellence and pushing forward human knowledge in the fields of social sciences, humanities and administration, which will eventually contribute to reinforcing DI creative and diversified academic community.
She concluded by wishing the students a successful academic journey and urged them to adopt an attitude of full and active integration and participation.
The last welcome remarks were delivered by Dr Mohamed Al Nawawi, Director of the Board of Doctoral Studies DI, who explained that the selection process is based on principles of competitiveness in relation to academic merits, and that it is designed as per best practices in the field.
He added that the programme aims at training generations of Qatari and Arab researchers and empowering them to engage in the development of their communities, each from his/her specialisation. The PhD programme, he explained, is one of the deepest specialised academic fields of its kind in the region.
Al Nawawi announced that the new registration and admission dates will be communicated on September 1 , 2022, and that it takes between four to five years to complete the programme.
The DI announced the start of receiving of applications for the PhD programme in November 2021, offering eight programmes that included Development Economics, Public Administration, Politics and International Relations, Linguistics and Arabic Lexicography, Media Studies and Critical Security Studies.
