Irbid, Aug 6 (Petra) -- Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh said Saturday that the nomination of Irbid as Capital of Arab Culture and Madaba as Capital of Arab Tourism points to Jordan's status at the regional and international levels.
Patronizing a celebration in Irbid, which was attended by Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship Ahmad Hanandeh, MPs and local figures, the Prime Minister said that the northern city, like other regions of the Kingdom, is known for its cultural and scientific contributions, which helped its choice as Arab Cultural Capital.
He referred to His Majesty King Abdullah's initiatives to defend the true image of Islam and promote Islamic values that exalt human dignity, including the Amman Message, a Common Word and World Interfaith Harmony Week, which was introduced by the king and adopted by the UN General Assembly.
Also during the event, the Prime Minister reiterated Jordan's call for an immediate cessation of the Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip and the need for the international community to help stop the aggression, provide protection to the Palestinian people and lift the blockade on Gaza.
He warned that the Israeli escalation would hinder any effort to achieve peace on the basis of the two-state solution.
