Iran, P4+1 To Resume Nuclear Talks In Vienna

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) VIENNA, Aug 4 (KUNA) -- A new round of negotiations between the P4+1 and Iran on latter's nuclear program will open in Vienna later Thursday amid modest hopes for breakthrough.
Prior to the meeting, Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani said that his country had responded to the European proposals to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement positively, adding that all involved parties in the current talks to consider the step to prevent what he deemed as a 'dangerous nuclear crisis'.
The draft proposal -- offered by the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell -- focused on lifting sanctions on Iran as stipulated by the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in exchange with Tehran's limiting of its nuclear capabilities.
Observers view the resumption of negotiations on Iran's nuclear file as a success of the EU's efforts in this regard; however, the overall settlement of the issue depended how involved parties would view the draft proposal.
The negotiations coincided with statements by the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi who warned that the Iranian nuclear program had rapidly development in recent weeks to an extent of being able to produce nuclear weaponry.
The JCPOA -- involving Iran, the US, France, the UK, Russia, and Germany -- did not reach its goals due to the withdrawal of the US in 2018 during the Presidency of Donald Trump and the US imposing heavy sanctions on Iran.
Tehran retaliated with gradually retreating from its JCOPA obligations.
Those remaining in the plan of action revived the negotiations on the agreement in April of 2021 via the in-direct participation of the US and EU mediation.
Despite great advancement in negotiations, talks were suspended last March due to Tehran and Washington not meeting eye-to-eye on certain points. (end)
