President Ranil Wickremesinghe has told China that countries must refrain from provocation.

He had expressed these views during a meeting with the Ambassador of China to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenghong.

“Countries must refrain from provocations which further escalate the current global tensions. Mutual respect and non-interference in the internal affairs of countries are important foundations for peaceful cooperation and non-confrontation,” he said.

The President also reiterated Sri Lanka's firm commitment to the one-China policy, as well as to the UN Charter principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations.

His views come as tensions rise between China and the US and China and India.

China has branded a landmark visit to Taiwan by US Speaker Nancy Pelosi as“extremely dangerous”.

It accused Ms Pelosi, the most senior US politician in 25 years to visit the island China claims as its own, of“playing with fire”.

India has meanwhile raised concerns with Sri Lanka for allowing a Chinese“spy ship” to arrive at the Hambantota Port. (Colombo Gazette)
