Computing Research Crucial To Knowledge-Based Economy: QU Researcher

Doha: Engineering research focusing on computing can play a significant role in building a sustainable and knowledge-based economy, Qatar University researcher and Associate Professor of Computer Engineering, College of Engineering Dr. Elias Yaacoub has disclosed.

Qatar has experienced remarkable economic and social development over the last 30 years.

Growth plans areat an increased pace with move to diversify the economy in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.

The government targets several non-energy sectors, including tourism, digitisation, the financial market and sports. In essence, the knowledge-based economy's main strength is the Qatari government's determination to diversify the economy.

“Engineering research, specifically computer engineering and computing research, has the most important role in building and sustaining a knowledge-based economy,” Dr. Yaacoub told the latest issue of QU's Research Magazine.

“The recent crisis caused by COVID-19 has demonstrated the importance of using online platforms to continue the education process, maintain business activities, and so on. Such platforms that everyone is used to now would not exist without computer engineering research.”

With research at its core, Qatar University strives to become a globally-recognised hub for impact-focused interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary research, making it a vital driving tool for Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030.

Dr. Yaacoub added that engineering research is fostering innovation at an unprecedented pace and unlocking horizons and technology like self-driving cars, remote robotic surgery, extended reality, intelligent robots, drone-based delivery, advanced medicine and genome research (using artificial intelligence), among others that were deemed impossible a few years back.
“These innovations might be within reach in the foreseeable future, although a couple of decades ago they seemed unlikely until centuries in the future.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Yaacoub disclosed that he plans to continue research on IoT for healthcare, using artificial intelligence techniques to detect heart diseases while maintaining the security of communications and privacy of patients.

“I will work on 6G wireless communications and the synergy interplay between artificial intelligence and 6G. I plan to investigate the issue of providing connectivity to rural and underprivileged areas that are not equipped with the necessary infrastructure for advanced connectivity (like 5G/6G), in addition to research in the area of communications for railroad networks,” he added.

Dr. Yaacoub also lauded QU's support and its focus on more high-quality, highly cited publications.
