Russia recommences gas exports via Nord Stream

(MENAFN) On Thursday, Gazprom began gas deliveries from Russia to Germany via the Nord Stream 1 Baltic Sea pipeline, according to the operator, Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa).

According to a Nord Stream AG representative, the pipeline was operating at 40% capacity.

Gazprom decreased Nord Stream flow last month and shut it altogether on July 11, citing normal repair work.

The resumption of supplies comes after the European Commission pressed EU members on Wednesday to cut their gas consumption by 15% until March of next year, fearing that Moscow would halt deliveries to Europe in retaliation for sanctions imposed on Russia for its military mission in Ukraine.

According to European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, "Russia is blackmailing us. Russia is using energy as a weapon."

Gazprom stated that it needs a repaired turbine from Canada in order for the Nord Stream to work correctly. The equipment was returned to Germany earlier this month after Ottawa granted an exemption from the penalties.
