A Pakistani delegation is due to arrive in Kabul today, July 18, to talk with the Taliban on matters relating to trade, transit, and transportation, including the possibility of the nighttime crossing of the border for the import of coal from Afghanistan.
Sualeh Ahmed Faruqui, Pakistan's Secretary of Commerce, is reportedly heading this delegation, which also includes senior officials from the Pakistani Ministries of Energy, Interior, Commerce, and Transport.
According to the Pakistani Ministry of Commerce, a delegation from the country will meet and discuss with the Taliban authorities in Kabul trade and transit between the two countries.
Pakistan's Dawn reports that Pakistan has decided that trading arrangements with Afghanistan will be commodity-to-commodity, barter, with exchanges made in Pakistani rupees.
In order to enable coal imports from Afghanistan through the night, Pakistan decided a few days ago to relax the trade restrictions. To that end, Pakistan wants border facilities to be open 24/7.
To that end, a recent amendment to the Pakistani import regulations permits the import of items of an Afghan origin against the Pakistani rupee and does not require the importers to submit Importers Electronic Forms for a year.
This occurs as 12,000 to 14,000 tons of coal from Afghanistan are exported every day, primarily to Pakistan.
