Mexican leader promises to destroy the Statue of Liberty

(MENAFN) Mexican Leader Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador claims the symbol of America’s freedom could lose its meaning if Washington rejects to drop responsibilities against Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange, who tackles the possibility of 175 years in jail.

Lopez Obrador announced at a news roundtable on Monday “If they take him to the United States and he is sentenced to the maximum penalty and to die in prison, we must start a campaign to tear down the Statue of Liberty,”. For Washington to condemn Assange would state that the world-famous monument in New York Harbor “is no longer a symbol of freedom,” he went on.

His declarations were because of criticism issued over the weekend by the Washington Post and NGO Reporters Without Borders criticizing the Mexican administration for its supposed failure to defend reporters.
