England to host European Women's Football Championship set to start on Wednesday

(MENAFN) The 2022 UEFA European Women's Football Championship is going to start on Wednesday.

The 13th version of the tournament is going to be played from July 6 to 31 in England with 15 additional countries joining the hosts.

Russia were banned from this summer's UEFA Women's EURO 2022 in reply to Moscow's attack on Ukraine, and were swapped by the Portugal.

The competition was stretched to 12 teams 13 years ago and to 16 teams in 5 years ago.

This year’s championship is going to be the second edition since it was stretched to 16 teams.

England is going to play against Austria in the first game of the tournament at Manchester's Old Trafford stadium, while the final of the tournament is going to be hosted at Wembley on July 31.

As stated by UEFA “There are four groups of four teams, with the top two in each progressing to the quarter-finals, from whence it is straight knockout.”
