Ohio's Akron City In State Of Emergency Following Protests Over Police Fatal Shooting

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, July 4 (KUNA) -- A state of emergency was declared Monday in the city of Akron, Ohio and a curfew was issued after protests that took place last night over the fatal shooting of a black man by police.
The Mayor of Akron Dan Horrigan said in a statement that early on Sunday, there were 'several peaceful protests in the downtown footprint related to the officer-involved shooting of Jayland Walker.
These protests did not escalate to violence and destruction.'
He added 'however, as night fell and others began to join, the protests became no longer peaceful. There was significant property damage done to downtown Akron.'
'We cannot and will not tolerate violence or the destruction of property,' he stressed.
'In light of the damage that has occurred and in order to preserve peace in our community, I have declared a state of emergency, implemented a curfew and canceled the fireworks which were scheduled for tonight.'
Last week, Jayland Walker, 25, was unarmed when he was shot at several times by Akron police after he 'fled an attempted traffic stop.' (end)
