(MENAFN) According to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on Saturday, Poland's desire to place nuclear weapons from the United States on its soil sparked the concept of restoring nuclear weapons to Belarus.
In his Independence Day speech in the nation's capital, Minsk, Lukashenko declared that “this topic with the President of Russia appeared after the Poles turned to the Americans and asked them to bring nuclear weapons to Poland. Then I told President Putin: ‘Why are we pretending that nothing is happening?’”
Lukashenko clarified that his discussions on the subject with Putin must not be interpreted as "nuclear blackmail." He asserted that following extensive deliberation, it was decided that Minsk should be prepared to respond defensively to possible hostile action "within 24 hours." " To do this, we need to prepare. And we will prepare. We do not threaten anyone, we do not blackmail anyone,” he noted.
On June 25, Lukashenko requested Vladimir Putin to assist Belarus in " to adapt " Su-35 aircraft, emphasizing that they "can carry nuclear charges."
