Beirut: The Speaker of the Parliament of Lebanon Nabih Berri met on Wednesday President of the Doha-based Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions, H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah and her accompanying delegation.
During the meeting, two sides reviewed ways of operationalising the National Human Rights Commission in Lebanon, including the most important conditions the commission can obtain Category (A) accordingly, by The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions.
The two sides also discussed the cooperation offered by the National Human Rights Commission in Lebanon and the Association for the Prevention of Torture in order to carry out their missions in fostering and protecting human rights in the country.
Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah called for the securing the commission's Headquarters and endorse the rules of procedure, including the financial regulation to be able to embark on its activities. She noted the immediate response provided by Lebanon's parliament speaker Nabih Berri, pointing out that he welcomed the observations of the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions and directed the concerned authorities to operate in securing the commission's Headquarters, indicating that he had promised to take further action to implement the remaining observations and enable the commission to carry out its tasks.
She pointed out that Lebanon's parliament speaker issued directives to the government authorities to submit their feedback in a timely manner pertaining to the rules of procedures and the financial regulation at the earliest.
On the other hand, Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah met with the President of the Higher Judicial Council Judge Suhail Abboud, and discussed the importance of offering the support and cooperation with the commission to bolster its operation in a better way.
Suhail Abboud welcomed the cooperation with the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions in the field of training a broad range of Judges on the latest updates of human rights issues, while Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah affirmed the Network's readiness to contribute with the commission to disseminate human rights culture through organizing joint webinars and training sessions.
