Following border tensions between the Taliban and Iranian border guards, the Taliban security officials in the province of Nimroz, in southwestern Afghanistan, claim that an Afghan child is injured in a shootout with Iranian forces.

According to Mullah Mohammad Ibrahim Hewad, the Taliban commander of the 5th Border Battalion in Nimroz province, the situation occurred while a young child was collecting garbage.

Commander Ibrahim Hewad also noted that the injured child is being treated at the Zaranj provincial hospital.

According to Iran's state news agency IRNA, an Iranian border guard was killed in a battle between“armed miscreants” from Afghanistan and Iranian border guards on the Afghan-Iranian border.

Mohammad Sayadi, the Iranian border guard, is said to have died in an armed clash in the Hirmand county border region of Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan province.

“The dimensions of this unfortunate incident in the Milak border area, … are being investigated by the authorities and will be announced as soon as the issue is clarified,” Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanani, said.

Kanani also stated that Afghanistan's caretaker government should clarify the issue,“punish the perpetrators and take the necessary measures to prevent similar incidents.”

Since taking over in mid-August of last year, the Taliban forces have often instigated armed skirmishes with the surrounding countries, particularly near the borders with Tajikistan, Iran, and Pakistan.
