Teenage Girl In Northeast Afghanistan Shoots Herself To Death

(MENAFN- Khaama Press)

According to the Taliban security officials in northeastern Takhar province, a 16-year-old girl has committed suicide by shooting herself.

The officials state that the incident happened on 29th June, in the Ishkamish district of Takhar province, in the northeastern region of Afghanistan.

The suicide was caused by domestic and family violence, according to Mullah Lal Mohammad Zarqawi, the district governor of Ishkamish.

Since suicide is stigmatized and seen as un-Islamic in rural, religious communities, many people keep their family's suicide attempts to themselves.

Despite the fact that there have previously been many instances of violence against women and female homicide in Afghan society, reports suggest that suicide among Afghan women has increased significantly recently.

Male suicides outnumber female suicides globally, however in Afghanistan, it is estimated that women attempt suicide at a rate of 80%, according to a report by BBC.

And violence against women is a common occurrence. According to statistics from the United Nations Population Fund, 62% of Afghan women have endured various forms of abuse, and 87% of women have experienced at least one form of physical, sexual, or psychological abuse.
