(MENAFN) As of last Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed over 3,400 recorded cases of monkeypox and one associated death worldwide, with the bulk of them coming from Europe. The WHO stated in an update on Monday that 1,310 additional cases had been reported to the UN health agency since June 17, with eight new nations reporting monkeypox cases.
Although WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed profound worry about the epidemic, the WHO decided last week not to designate monkeypox a public health emergency of worldwide significance. The WHO also noted that there were several unknowns surrounding the epidemic.
Tedros stated in a released statement that "I am deeply concerned about the monkeypox outbreak, this is clearly an evolving health threat that my colleagues and I in the WHO Secretariat are following extremely closely."
