At least 46 migrants were discovered dead inside tractor-trailer in Texas
(MENAFN) Authorities claimed Monday night that 46 individuals were discovered dead inside a tractor-trailer in a suspected migrant smuggling attempt on a Texas highway.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said the fatalities were located inside the 18-wheeler on Quintana Road shortly before 6 p.m. local time.
Officials claimed 16 survivors, including four youngsters, were sent to surrounding hospitals for heatstroke and dehydration.
A nearby worker heard a call for assistance and discovered the trailer with its doors half open and people inside, according to authorities.
One person was discovered outside the vehicle, while many more were discovered inside.
“We’re not supposed to be able to open a truck and see stacks of bodies in there,” San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood stated.
He also stated that there was no water inside and that there was no functional air conditioning or refrigeration.
In the midst of a heat wave, temperatures in San Antonio hit 103 degrees on Monday.
Three persons were arrested in connection with the event, although it was unclear what their roles were.
