8 IS militants murdered in Iraq

(MENAFN) The Iraqi forces killed eight terrorists of the radical Islamic State (IS) organization, thought to be local group commanders, in a rural region north of Baghdad on Tuesday.

The Iraqi military forces traced the militants in al-Tharthar valley in Salahudin Province's western portion and engaged with them after encircling their hideaway, according to the media office of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC).

Later, Iraqi jets and helicopter gunships were brought in and carried out three strikes that demolished the stronghold and killed the terrorists inside, according to the JOC statement.

According to the report, the forces discovered weapons and logistical equipment at the area.
Iraqi security forces have launched operations against extremist militants in recent months in order to crack down on their increased activity.

Since the demise of the Islamic State in 2017, the security situation in Iraq has improved. However, the IS remnants have now dispersed into urban areas, deserts, and rocky terrain, launching periodic guerrilla assaults on security personnel and civilians.
