NATO aspirant throws bloc's warships

(MENAFN) On Friday, two American battleships and a French Navy vessel merged a German frigate in Helsinki. Finland has attempted to join NATO and has participated in a number of drills with other countries. Sweden, another potential candidate, will host a large NATO exercise next month.

The USS Gravely, an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, the USS Gunston Hall, and the French Navy's F70 type anti-submarine ship Latouche-Treville moored in Helsinki on Friday and will stay until Monday, according to Finnish officials.

The warships have accompanied the German Navy's Sachsen, the class leader in air-defense frigates. It landed in Helsinki on Wednesday after participating in a joint drill previously in the week with Finland's Coastal Fleet.

The two US Navy ships also participated in a combined naval drill in the Baltic. It also included the USS Kearsarge, a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, as well as soldiers from Finland and Sweden. The training was attended by Sweden's second-largest battleship, the HSwMS Carlskrona.
