New York closes last of its payphone stations

(MENAFN) The last of New York City's storied payphone booths, which have fallen prey to the availability of free Wi-Fi and mobile phones in recent years, was removed this week, marking the end of an era.

However, Superman fans can take heart in the fact that Manhattan will preserve four of the closed down booths, which were best known for serving as unplanned changing rooms for journalist Clark Kent as he transformed into the Man of Steel.

Phone booths have appeared widely in pop culture over the years, from comic books to Hollywood blockbusters and TV shows.

Mr Levine tweeted he was “on hand today to say 'Bye Bye' one last time to the famed (infamous?) NYC payphone”.
